Paul Olsen

Be Part Of The Solution

What a Golden Opportunity for us !!! Paul Olsen Vice President of Product Development & Marketing at Polygroup Limited is developing an Open Innovation Portal for his company and he contacted us to see how he could integrate the Independent Inventor Community into the project. What does this mean?
In general, large companies consider Independent Inventors as tinkering dreamers. After all, they employ the brightest and the best engineers, designers, product developers to come up with ways to expand their lines as well as develop new lines to keep their competitive edge in their respective industry. This led to almost an eternity of the, “Not Invented Here Not Interested” attitude.

Then in 2003, Dr. Henry Chesbrough began to convince the larger companies to look outside their doors for disruptive new concepts that could greatly increase their bottom line. This has been a huge success. However, each company approaches the system in different ways. Some are very ridged requiring issued patents and laborious questioners that cover all the issues in a formal business plan. While others are very open and more relaxed. I believe Paul is leaning toward the latter.

Polygroup Limited http://www.polygroup.com/ is a world-wide leader in the manufacturing of artificial Christmas Trees, Christmas lighting, Air Mattresses, summer inflatables and above the ground swimming pools.

Mr. Olsen has worked his way up to Director of Operations & Product Development for Swimways in Hong Kong and was the Director of Global Brand Management and Product Development for Toys R Us which makes him perfect for his present position.

The September 8th Meeting
Agreements

One thing we can all agree on is as inventors our lives are chock full of agreements. Confidentiality Agreements, Non-Disclosure Agreements, Work for Hire Agreements, Licensing Agreements, Manufacturing Agreements, Prenuptial Agreements, the list can go on forever but how much do we know about agreements?

Do you know the parts and pieces of agreements? Do you understand or even read the agreements that you sign? Do you just leave that up to your lawyer or do you just trust the person handing you the agreement? Boy, have I got a deal for you…just kidding.

Robert Drolet  www.rldpatents.com has a unique perspective as an Attorney in that he is also an Professional Engineer as well as a Retired US Navy Nuclear Engineer . All of those fields focus on details and the literal meaning of things but an engineer gets down to the nuts and bolts that make things work. As a Patent Attorney this means he can better understand how your invention works so he can better describe it in the specifications which leads to stronger claims.

Werner Blumenthal

Strong Product, Strong Demand

How a Properly Designed Product Can Boost Your Profit Margins.

See The Presentation Here

Most of us have an idea of what our invention should look like and how it will work but truthfully, have no idea of how it is going to be manufactured. I have seen it time and time again, where inventors become adamant about a certain material choice or features that more than quadruples the cost of production placing them outside of a reasonable price point.
In this presentation Werner Blumenthal will walk you through what it takes to get from an initial concept to a viable, scalable and optimized product ready for market.
Learn what you should focus on and how seemingly small details can really affect not only product performance … but more importantly, your bottom line. Launching a product from scratch requires the coordination of a lot of moving parts. Before embarking on this journey, learn to think, create and eventually succeed by stacking the odds in your favor. This seminar will summarize the process from design to product fabrication covering such topics as:
• Idea Workshop
• Traditional Product Development
• Conceptual Design vs. Engineering Design
• Test and Validation of Design, Digitally
• Design optimization
• Business strategies for manufacturing
Mr. Blumenthal is the Founder and CEO of WB Engineering http://wb-3d.com and has been heavily involved in the 3D Printing industry since 2007when he became Florida’s first 3D Systems’ authorized reseller. Werner has experience in design and prototyping of medical devices, consumer products and aerospace, with clients including Magic Leap, Stryker, Vivex and Boston Science.
Armed with the knowledge you will get from this extremely vital presentation, you will be able to see your products in a totally different light. The more you can streamline and develop a product ready for manufacturing the less you will need to pay for redesign.

Terence Bently

Lean Launch Pad

Here is a link to notes  ISSF LLP Review

What would you call a system that promises to give you a more accurate, efficient method of evaluating the commercial value of any project before you write the dreaded business plan? I’d call it an inventor’s dream come true.

Those in the know call it Lean Launch Pad (LLP). It was developed by Steve Blank, a serial entrepreneur and Alex Osterwalder, a Swiss researcher. They identified two key issues.

First, that startups are not smaller versions of large corporations. Large corporations write Business Plans that are built on their past experience of their particular market. Startups, on the other hand, reflect the vision of their founder, pursuing a market that is usually unclear and often disruptive. Searching for new ideas, products and markets, as startups do, demands a very different approach than enhancing the old as corporations do.

Second, that defining the right market for the Startup’s product must be a fluid process. The Business Plan says, “here’s what I’m going to do”, locking down a limited definition of the market and product. LLP says, “what does the market want?”, flexibly discovering the right need for the right market. This critical process is called discovering the Product-Market Fit. When you discover it, your focused, succinct, targeted Business Plan will often write itself.

The LLP’s motto is “get out of the building”. Interview market participants- customers, designers, channel partners and even competitors- to find out what the market wants. Listen to them, and pivot when appropriate to adapt your idea to market needs. This promotes a flexible disruptive approach, which is difficult for the large corporation. They don’t have the freedom to be disruptive, you do.

Terence Bently is an executive with 35 years of experience in Technology M&A, Marketing, Strategic Business Development and Product Management. He has closed over 40 Tech M&A investments and transactions, made investment decisions concerning hundreds of Business Plans and Proposals as well as delivered 25 Network Products to market. He also has extensive startup advisory experience.

He is a Co-Founder of The Venture Mentoring Team www.thevmt.org here in Florida. Terence served as a Mentor at FAU’s Tech Runway, Startup Quest and the Broward Innovation Hub. He has also served as a Judge for the prestigious Cade Prize for Innovation and the U.S. Department of State TECH-I International Business Plan Competition. He is a co-founder and Board Member of the Association for Corporate Growth’s (ACG) New Jersey Chapter and a past Board Member if the ACG New York City Chapter.

Most importantly, Terence has been a Lean Launchpad Instructor at FIU’s College of Engineering, Startup Now and taught the Florida Veterans Entrepreneurship Program. He has an MBA in finance from the Carroll School of Management at Boston College.

HERE IS A GREAT VIDEO FROM OUR LAST MEETING WATCH HERE

DREAMS !!! I was talking about BIG Dreams. What were you thinking? From that first light bulb moment when with astonishment you realized This Could Be Huge. Then throughout the grueling process of clawing your way to success an inventor has to maintain an extraordinary amount of faith, motivation and determination. There are no consolation prizes in this game. You either Go for it or Go home.
Let’s face it, it is next to impossible to keep up that kind of intensity forever. You will have set backs. You will encounter road blocks. There will be moments of self doubt, indecisions, loss of confidence and utter despair but You have got to pull yourself together to push your project forward to its’ ultimate triumph. How can you muster up the strength to do this? By listening to this months’ speaker.
John Rizvi is a Registered Patent Attorney, the creator of The Patent Professor®, an educational video series, and TEDx speaker, but more than anything he is a man who knows how to set unbelievably high goals and achieve them.
When he graduated law school over 20 years ago he applied to Fish and Neave the most impressive patent law firm in the world. Their client list included the Wright Brothers, Alexander Graham Bell and cases such as the near $1 billion Polaroid patent infringement case. To me, that is the definition of Going For It. When he was rejected, did he just go home with his tail between his legs? NO !!!
He called them up and gave them a piece of his mind. So when he saw the envelope from them in the mail he immediately thought, “Law Suit?” after all, he is primarily an attorney but to his surprise he was hired.
His private practice, www.ThePatentProfessor.com , is another Got For It or Go Home story but I will let him tell that one.
We all can use some motivation. We all need to develop that Go For It attitude and John Rizvi IS the man to inspire you to do so but first you must register by going to this website http://bit.ly/2JRPHJx then go to the James A Rutherford Community Center at Patch Reef Park 2000 West Yamato Road which is ¼ mile west of Military Trail in Boca Raton FL 33431 at 1:00 pm on Saturday 6/9/18 or you may as well stay Home.
Doors open at 12:30.

Meet The Fischlschweigers

Speakers for the May 12th Meeting

Meet The Fischlschweigers

Eileen and Tom, each in their own field, is a dynamic research artist that will blow you away with the knowledge they possess. Put them together and they raise the bar to super heroes status. They are on the cutting edge of the changes going on in each of their fields.
Tom is a Senior Librarian whose specialty is Government issues. He deals mainly with statistics, laws as well as other Government data bases. He can help you find or point you in the right direction to find all sorts of data for your business plan or pitch. He will be speaking about this and some of the new websites as well as how to navigate them.
Years ago some of you might remember the eye opening presentation he gave us regarding Government Grants. Tom agreed to give a brief overview from that presentation as well. I have kept an eye on some of the points he made back then and I have to say he is spot on!
Eileen is the Senior/ Patent and Trademark Resource Center (PTRC) Representative Librarian as such her focus is, of course, on US Patent and Trademark issues. She has helped innumerous would be inventors get started with patent and trademark searches. She recently gave presentations on the new CPC classification system to both new comers and old timers like me to get us up to speed.
On top of her regular duties, Eileen is at the forefront of new programs and opportunities coming from the USPTO. She was the first in the country to test the new Pro Se video conference system. She has earned the reputation of being a major contributor to many projects. When I suggested doing the May meeting she got all excited as she will be just returning from the National Conference and will have tons of new information to pass on to us.
There are some people who feel the USPTO is a tool of the big companies but I can tell you, nothing could be further from the truth. From the time our good friend Don Kelly instituted the Independent Inventors Assistance Center to date I have seen so many programs geared to help us, for example the restructuring of the Depository Library into the new Resource Center.
You will never find a better resource then the Fischlschweigers. So you better find your way to the James A Rutherford Community Center at Patch Reef Park 2000 West Yamato Road which is ¼ mile west of Military Trail in Boca Raton FL 33431 at 1:00 pm on Saturday 5/12/18 to Meet The Fischlschweigers.

Past Speakers – Joel Martin Hartstone

Speaker For The April 14th Meeting

Meet Mr. Business

Joel Martin Hartstone IS Mr. Business. Just a few years out of Cornell Law School, he became the Chief Investment Counsel for Aetna Life & Casualty, at the time the Nation’s largest diversified financial institution. There, Mr. Hartstone had legal responsibility for the Company’s corporate investments and loan portfolios, including closing all new loans and investments (over $1 billion annually) and managing all troubled assets. He managed a team of 8 corporate finance and investment lawyers and oversaw the work of all outside deal counsel.
From there his career skyrocketed. After six years building a major corporate law firm (now, part of Morgan Lewis), he redirected his career from the practice of law to private investment and merchant banking in 1982. That’s when he co-founded Hartstone & Dickstein Incorporated, which became StoneGate Capital Group in 1996. During that time, Mr. Hartstone has been responsible for engineering billions of dollars of M&A and financing transactions involving hundreds of businesses in numerous industries.
He also held ownership interests in, and directly managed, numerous enterprises. In the media area, as CEO of various private corporations, limited partnerships, and limited liability companies, he managed over 50 radio stations in 20 markets and held ownership interests in over a dozen television stations. He also served as the first President and CEO of Commander Premier Aircraft Corporation.
As the Entrepreneur in Residence at The IP Factory, Inc. (IPF), a non-profit corporation promoted by the State of Connecticut, he engaged and guided student-faculty-technologist teams to originate and explore opportunities to commercialize provided technologies. For promising opportunities, Mr. Hartstone guided the formation of new companies until CEOs or teams were recruited for each venture.
Mr. Hartstone also created a program called the One Day MBA which promises to give students an overview of the basics they need to succeed in business. From that program, Joel will be sharing his module on Marketing. This is not your run of the mill marketing course but an in depth How To presentation, explaining how to pull together all the information needed, analyze it to determine viability and implement the right strategy for success. If anyone knows how to do all this consistently It Is Mr. Business.
So if you don’t come to LIGI Tool & Engineering, Inc. (3220 SW 15th Street Deerfield Beach, FL  33442) on 4/14/18 at 1:00pm and learn all this experienced professional is willing to share, then I don’t want to hear that you don’t know what to do next.

Past Speakers – Leigh Rothschild

Speaker for the March 10th Meeting

Failure And Recovery

Leigh Rothschild is probably one of the most prolific inventors of all time with over 100 issued patents and just under 220 published applications, all of which contain at least some part of high technology. Even patent number 9,683,729 which is for a Battery-Conserving Flashlight and Method Thereof, is a normal looking flashlight with a very sophisticated processor.

He conceived his first patented product at 17 years old and has been selling or licensing his patents to Fortune 500 companies ever since. He also created several companies based on his technologies which he also successfully sold. In several of the articles I read about him, he says inventing is his passion and he would rather have someone else handle the business side of making money.

Sounds familiar doesn’t it ? If I had a nickel for every inventor who told me that I could buy all of Manhattan ! OK, maybe I’m exaggerating just a little but that is The Dream of most inventors and Leigh is living that Dream.

As with any mega successful inventor these days, Mr. Rothschild is all too familiar with our legal system from every side of it including the newly created monster known as the PTAB. So I am sure he will be able to give you insider details about how to protect and enforce your intellectual property.

We all know that a great invention doesn’t just pop into your head and the next day you can sell   or license it for millions. Once again, Leigh is going to take you behind the scenes and tell you about all the hard work that goes into developing a successful project. As the title of his presentation is Failure and Recovery, you can bet his bed of roses story had its’ share of thorny failures but in the end he triumphed. I can’t wait to hear how he did it.

Don’t miss this chance to hear and meet this great man as he gives you the inside view of his struggle to achieve the dream we all long for. Come to LIGI Tool & Engineering, Inc. (3220 SW 15th Street Deerfield Beach, FL  33442) at 1:00 pm on Saturday 3/10/18 to begin your journey.

Doors open at 12:30pm.

Past Speaker – Chris Nolan

chris-nolan

The Master Of Success

chris-nolanChris Nolan literally blew me away with story after story regarding successful projects ranging from animal products to water purification systems and much, much more. All of these stories start out with a great product that is floundering with minimal success. At which point, Chris comes along and

  • Defines the marketable essence of the project. This could be the pain point it relieves, a desire, a need, etc..
  • Develops a strategy
  • Then implements that strategy

Sounds pretty simple, doesn’t it, but in those three steps hides the magic. With each story you will see the brilliance unfold. It is so easy to get mesmerized but what I want you to do is focus on  how to use his techniques on your products.

In the “old days” there was a saying, “You can judge a salesman’s worth by the size of his Rolodex”. Now for those of you too young to know what a Rolodex is let me explain, it is an ancient paper data base with all your business contacts. Mr. Nolan seems to know everyone. This comes from a life time of service and honesty. This is yet another skill you need to learn from him and can; just by being in his presence.

Lastly, you hear me harp about this all the time but you need to develop a set of powerful pitches for your project to have at the ready at all times because you never know when that perfect opportunity will arise. Once again, here’s Mr. Nolan to the rescue.

He is in demand to teach corporate sales teams how to pitch. He has developed an incredible all day event on 5/31/18 at FAU with an unbelievable list of experts through his company Speak Up called JumpStart™ which is a sales education symposium and more including extended training. Check it out here http://www.speakupsalestraining.com/

If you plan to license to corporations. Going to corporate events like this teaches you how your corporate contacts think. What impresses them. How they do things and if they see you doing things the way they do, they may consider you a colleague rather than some crazy inventor.

Past Speaker – eMachineShop – CAD

Speaker For The January 13th Meeting

FREE CAD Program

What could be better than that?!? I’ll tell you, a FREE CAD program that is easy to use with very simple tutorials that actually work and, here comes the best part, it will give you pricing for the part you just created, on the fly. You can even order it right then and there.

I mean… what more could you ask for? I know, I know, a unit that could capture the vision in your head and do all the work for you. Inventors! Always looking for the easy way out. Well, this is as good as it gets.

How do I know? I tried it out for myself. At first, it appears deceptively simple and I thought how could you get complicated shapes with so few tools but that’s the beauty of this program. By mastering just a few simple tools, in no time, you can draw just about anything you want.

Let’s face it, everyone serious about inventing needs to learn CAD. Sure, you can sketch something out on a napkin and bring it to a professional. Then spend hours ($) playing with it, refining it, blowing your entire budget before you get it right OR you can spend some time learning this new skill then spend as much time as you need to perfect and produce your product.

eMachineShop.com will be giving us a LIVE demonstration via Skype. Their presentation will include some basics to get you started then some more advanced techniques to give you an idea of the things you can do with the software as well as the services they provide which are quite extensive. They do everything from Rapid Prototyping through machining, various types of cutting, injection molding to full production runs.

get-free-cad-banner

To take full advantage of this presentation, I suggest that you go to www.eMachineShop.com and download the software Right Now. Go through some of the tutorials and start working with the software. So when you come to the meeting you will have your questions ready.

I can almost guarantee that once you start working with this program your life will change because You will be able to take your vision and bring it to life right before your eyes. There is no greater motivation than that.

To start this Life Changing Experience of turning your vision into reality come to LIGI Tool & Engineering, Inc. (3220 SW 15th Street Deerfield Beach, FL  33442) at 1:00 pm on Saturday 1/13/18 and learn what eMachineShop can do for you. Doors open at 12:30pm.
